Although 2020 has felt like a weird staycation, we all still deserve a proper vacation.
My family doesn’t really go anywhere as vacations because.. we just never started doing that. (Don’t ask *grimace*) But the concept of vacations—going somewhere to get away from daily life to chill and have fun—really appeals to me.
Today, I’m asking you to imagine your perfect break—only it’s with your favourite fictional characters.
The Fantasy Winter Retreat Book Tag summary
You get to go on a week-long retreat to chill and have fun after the stressful 2020 experience. Set the scene of your dream winter retreat and, using the prompts, round up the characters you’d like to vacation with!
What my retreat would look like
I’m a homebody. I don’t do travelling all day and seeing a ton of places. It would be nice to explore, sure, but would I wake up early every day to do that? No. My vacations have to be easy and comfortable.
Hence, a retreat would be PERFECT for me. My dream retreat/vacation would be going to a house in the forest whether there aren’t neighbours close by, with all supplies required, such that I can just stay there for a week.
I’m imagining: a big house with lots of browns and wood colour tones, several rooms to host all my friends and I, and a huge living room with a fireplace, comfy couches, and big windows.
Now that the setting is in place, time to choose whom I’d go on this heavenly retreat with. Onto the tag!
A fun character who’s presence would cheer up any situation
Leo Valdez from Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan! I SO BADLY want to vacation with Leo. He’d be so fun to hang with! And, as an added bonus, he can easily keep the fire going to warm everyone up.
A character who would parent everyone
Generally, I’m the parent in any friend group. But for this retreat, if I had to let go and someone else was taking care of everyone, it would be Banu Nahri from the Daevabad trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty. I only recently finished the series and Nahri would definitely be the parent in a friend group. She would boss everyone around and order people to stop being reckless. Being a healer, she would also help heal any injuries while muttering complaints about coming along to this retreat.
A character who would plan games and other activities
Kenji Kishimoto from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. He would be Leo’s partner-in-crime during the retreat because of their personalities. Kenji is the person who would organize fun games and bring everyone together with sarcasm and charm.
A character who would rather cozy up in blankets & sleep/laze around all day
This would be me. And with me would be Darius Kellner from Darius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram. I see Darius as a gentle and calm soul who would chill on the sofa next to me with tea and blankets.
Another such character would be Annie Catrel from The Hooker and the Hermit by L. H. Cosway and Penny Reid. She would totally love the cabin retreat life and would lounge on the sofa.
A character who had to cancel other plans to be here
Alex Claremont-Diaz from Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. I see him as a verybusy and popular person. Alex has a 100 things to do and tons of people to meet. He probably got dozens of invites for vacation plans and would have cancelled/turned down everything to be with us.
A character who brought their work along with them
Rhiannon Hunter from The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai. Rhiannon’s goal is world domination and her mind is constantly working with new plans and strategies. She is a woman on a mission and will not leave her work behind for a week-long retreat.
A character who would not leave their partner’s side
Quinn Sullivan from Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid. He is super overbearing and would definitely not leave Janie’s side. He is like a grumpy big brother to everyone else and will only help if Janie asks him to.
A character who is amused by everyone’s antics
Lila Bard from Shades of Magic trilogy by V. E. Schwab. I can picture Lila smirking and being amused by everyone throughout the retreat. She wouldn’t even need to do anything to be entertained.
Also, Sring Venka from The Poppy War trilogy by R. F. Kuang. Just imagine Venka with this random group of characters in a cabin for a week. She’d lounge around and watch Leo and Kenji being a mess, would laugh at Nahri parenting everyone, and goad the people staying in blankets all day.
