I had a good reading week only because my eyes because way too strained and did NOT allow me to look at screens a lot. In fact, the last 5 days I’ve been managing my strained eyes with work. When not working, I mostly just rest my eyes by either being in a dark room or avoided screens as much as possible.
This didn’t allow me to blog as much (I’m going to finish this post as soon as I can and go back to resting my eyes, I promise) or watch anything online. Which meant that I read, or rather listened to audiobooks. Audiobooks honestly really helped.
Anyway, let’s get to the books!
WWW Wednesday is a weekly blogging meme hosted by Taking On a World of Words.
The Three Ws are:
- What are you currently reading?
- What did you recently finish reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently in the middle of Loveless by Alice Oseman on audiobook. I started it last night and I’m quite enjoying it! It’s been a while since I read a good book with a university setting. It is quite hyped so I definitely have some expectations.
What did you recently finish reading?
I have FOUR BOOKS to talk about!
The first book is The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta. I “read” this as an audiobook and quite enjoyed it. The poetry and spoken word parts were especially really good. The audiobook is narrated by the author so I feel like it came through very well because the author speaks exactly how he wants us to hear it. With other narrators, the meaning can get lost sometimes.
While it was a good read, I didn’t enjoy it very much? It did not make me feel as much as other books I’ve read and that’s the only reason why I rated it a little lower.
The next book that I picked up was for an upcoming book tour on the blog. I read it a little earlier than required because I like to have some time to review. The book is question is Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn which is a young adult contemporary with Thai-American main characters. It’s a very cute own voices book and I can’t wait to talk more about it in my review!
Next, I picked up The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. For the past two or so months, MANY people have been reading and recommending it. I felt like picking up a general fiction book on Friday (because it’s the weekend and I have time!) so I started this one. It was quite thrilling and intriguing.
The book made me want to go back to it every time I paused, and hence it’s not surprising that I finished it by Sunday. The multiples storylines, the depiction of many different kinds of racism, and how people with the same childhood can turn out to be very different is brilliantly shown. I highly suggest it if you haven’t read it.
The last book that I finished was My Calamity Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. This was another audiobook read and the only reason I finished this quickly was because my eyes were not good to actually read. The audiobook was 13 and a half hours! I listen at 2x so it was almost 7h but that’s still quite long.
The narrator also spoke so slowly. 2x felt like normal speed. Again, the only reason I finished it was because I listen to one audiobook at a time and I couldn’t traditionally read. The book was also for a 2020 Popsugar Reading Challenge prompt so I had to finish it anyway.
It was a good enough book but.. I have mixed feelings. I’ll talk about it in a proper review.
What do you think you’ll read next?
I found out that Pinki and Nikhat are buddy reading The Switch by Beth O’Leary and asked to join in. I really liked The Flatshare by the author and since I got this book on Libro.fm recently, joining them to read is great timing.
I’m also hoping to pick up another book for 2020 Popsugar Reading Challenge. Probably either Ninth House or To Kill a Kingdom since I’m in the mood to go back to fantasy.
What books did you read recently? Have you read any of the books that I mentioned?
