Top Ten unique book character names

top ten unique book character names

One of the things that makes me like a book are the characters’ names. I would be so much more appealed to unique names like Scarecrow* or something than Holly, Molly, Jolly or Kelly. To be honest, I don’t find many of guys names boring? But yeah, unique names definitely capture attention.

*Not a good example but that WOULD honestly make me so interested

This week’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and The Bookish is Top Ten unique book titles but I automatically thought of character names? Like, my brain doesn’t listen to me?? So I’m going to give myself a little bit of libertyTM and head on with the names.

[1] Lazlo Strange

I read the word unique and Strange popped into my head. No wonder, too, considering the man himself is pretty unique.* His name was just the tip of the iceberg though. The world building of Strange the Dreamer was just brilliant and left me dreaming in speechlessness**.

*Hint: I LOVE HIM TO PIECES

**is it just me or does this word seem too big out of nowhere? Like, I didn’t think speechlessness was that big?

[2] Celaena Sardothien/Aelin Ashryver Galathynius

I mean.. come on. It looks like Sarah J Maas took random letters and put them together. I know at least two people who still struggle with the names. And it’s been, what, five years?

Also, can I just say how glad I am that the series will be ending next year? IT’S BEEN TOO LONG, MATE. I’ve been following the series since the year Heir of Fire released (that was when I noticed the hype and picked up the book) and it feels like I’ve been waiting forever.

This sort of reminds me of House of Night series? It was the only other series for which I waited years and years. I legit kept up with the series for SIX YEARS*. And it has twelve books so I PITY those who waited the whole time.

*No even I don’t know why I spent so much time on that series don’t ask me

[3] Feyre Archereon

Another SJ Maas book. Another name. This seems smol and easy, you say? WELL THEN, PRONOUNCE IT.

Till date I’m unsure of how to pronounce it exactly. Only a couple weeks back was I discussing with a friend on how to pronounce the name and we had a five minute talk over it. Five.

Even though a pronounciation guide has been given on the author’s website, readers still pronounce the name as they wish. I really hope there isn’t a TV show or movie* on the books because it would confuse the heck out of everyone.

*ALSO BECAUSE NO ONE WILL EVER DO RHYSAND JUSTICE AND I DON’T WANT HIS IMAGE IN MY MIND TO BE BOTCHED THANKS

[4] Patch Cipriano

I’m including him purely out of humour. It IS unique. Have you read another book where a character was named Patch? It sounds like a common name but I realised only recently, when I reread Hush Hush, that it isn’t.

Also, I don’t know why I ever loved the series? I clearly remember myself being OBSESSED over it and recommending it to my friends, but I tried to reread the first book and I could NOT get through it. Cringe. Overload.

I also tried to binge Teen Wolf recently and cringed almost the entirety of the first episode so maybe my tastes were just that bad before? Because I watched Teen Wolf till season 3! I liked it! But now I can’t even get through episode 1?

[5] Daenerys Targaryen

I feel like Sarah J Maas took inspiration from George R. R. Martin. It feels like even he took random letters and rearranged it so that it could be pronounced with a little work.

I mean, what even is this name? Don’t get me wrong, I really like it. But HOW did he even come up with it??

She’s probably the only reason I even watched till season 5 of Game of Thrones*. Although everyone’s telling me to watch season 7 because it is BOMB, we’ll see. We’ll see.

*I read book 1 and gave up lol

[6] Blue Sargent

First of all, blue is my favourite colour.

Now that that has been acknowledged, I would OBVIOUSLY be interested in a character named Blue. Not to undermine The Raven Cycle, though. The series is amazing.

But then, I WOULD be interested in characters named Orange, Yellow, Pink as well. Especially Black. Someone write a book with a main character called Black. He/she would have so much swag. I would love the heck out of it.

“And what might be your name?”

“Black. My parents named me after the colour of my soul. And my coffee preference.”

[7] Karou

_20171010_220548

There are so many reasons why Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is really good. One, it’s written by Laini Taylor so, OBVIOUSLY? She also wrote Strange the Dreamer later?

One of the reasons why I love this book is because it’s set in Prague. I learnt from the book that Karou* actually means hope.

*I’m also not able to find Karou’s last name? Does she not have one? My memory sucks.

[8] Lada Dragwyla

_20171010_220616

Her name is TOTALLY AWESOME because it sounds like dragon. #bookwormopinions

I haven’t read And I Darken* but I really want to because the character HAS to be totally awesome as well, having such a name, right?

*It’s buried somewhere in my TBR mountain

[9] Adelina Amouteru

_20171010_220801

To be honest, though, many names in this book are really nice. Adelina Amouteru, Teren Santoro, Enzo Valenciano* etc.

But what I ESPECIALLY loved was the name of the kingdom—Kenettra. Don’t ask me why. I just do,

*His name rhymes lol. Yes I’m a five year old.

[10] Ever Bloom

_20171010_230401

The last name is one I really want to mock? I mean, out of everything, why would you name your kid* Ever Bloom?? I could totally picture her getting bullied in school for her name.

It’s like naming your kid Summer Winter. OH WAIT. I actually have read a book where the main character’s name was Summer Winter! It was some romance book that didn’t make much of an impression on me**, but I cracked up when I read her name.

I also didn’t like The Immortals very much. Okay I hated it. So perhaps it increases my inclination to rant about the MC.

*word interchangeable with book baby because obviously the characters of your book are your babies.

**Hence why I am not able to recall it now. It’s been about a couple years since I read that book, I believe?

What are some unique book character names you have come across? If you know of any good book with unique character names, do let me know in the comments! I’ll add it to my TBR mountain and probably get to it in another… fifty-four years? If you have done this week’s TTT as well, drop your link in the comments! I’d love to check it out.

  1. I love the name Karou!! I don’t remember her last name (if it were even mentioned at all).
I adore Blue as well and I’d totally read a book with a character named Black, especially if they were as sassy as that quote xD

      1. But then it wouldn’t be exotic fantasy would it? 😂 I would honestly not be that interested if the name was Selena and not Celaena.

    1. Lazlo Strange is who I want to be 😂
Yeah Feyre’s last name didn’t make much of an impression in the books. I only remember as she’s an Archer and her last name is similar to it.
